In May 2024, I had the pleasure of hosting a macro underwater photography workshop in the stunning waters of Tulamben, Bali. Over ten days, 16 enthusiastic photographers joined me to dive into the intricate world of macro photography, capturing the fascinating details of underwater life.
I’m excited to share the highlights of this workshop and announce our next adventure in Lembeh in May 2025, where even more exciting opportunities await.
Bali Workshop Overview
Dates: 8 – 18 May 2024
Location: Tulamben, Bali
Dive Sites included: Liberty Wreck, Melasti, Sidem, Seraya, Gerombong, Coral Gardens, Batu Niti, Batu Ringgit, Kuanji
Participants: 16 photographers (intermediate to advanced) using a range of cameras, including the Olympus TG6, Canon G7X Mk III, Sony RX100 VII, Canon R7, Canon R5, Nikon D850, Nikon Z8, Sony A7Riv, Fuji XT3, Olympus EM-10 Mike and Olympus EM1-Mkii.
Daily Schedule and Learning Activities
Our days were packed with learning and diving, starting with breakfast at 07:00, followed by a lecture on the day’s photographic technique. We then embarked on two dives in the morning at the same site to practice these techniques, returning to the resort for lunch and an afternoon or night dive. Each evening concluded with a detailed image review session.

- Understand Your Camera Settings: Create tack-sharp images with the correct settings.
- Compose Beautiful Shots: Develop interesting and visually appealing compositions.
- Use a Diopter: Fill the frame with your subject effectively.
- Control Lighting:Position strobes or video lights for creative, even lighting.
- Create Black Backgrounds: Achieve stunning black backgrounds without a snoot.
- Master the Snoot: Use a snoot or snoot torch to light and isolate subjects.
- Capture Beautiful Bokeh: Create images with beautiful bokeh backgrounds.
- Creative Lighting Techniques: Utilise torches and accessories for creative underwater photos.
- Develop Your Style: Establish a unique style of macro underwater photography.
- Edit with Lightroom: Learn basic editing techniques to enhance photos.

Workshop Highlights
The camaraderie among participants was incredible, with everyone supporting and encouraging each other. The dive guides were exceptionally helpful, ensuring photographers stayed focused on their tasks and offering their own tips for improvement.
There were many memorable moments – right from our first image review session after our first lessons – to see the quality of images that everyone was able to produce after understanding and learning what settings worked best for their cameras, right through to when they knew what style to shoot certain subjects. I was immensely proud by how studious they were, and how they worked hard to perfect the techniques we learned as the workshop went by.
